Overview
Founded in 1974, Querciabella enjoys the acclaim of the world’s most discriminating critics and consumers for wines such as Camartina, Batàr, Palafreno and Querciabella Chianti Classico. In its uncompromising pursuit of quality, sustainability and authenticity, Querciabella has continually honed its approach to biodynamic viticulture for over a decade. With vineyards located throughout Tuscany’s Chianti Classico and Maremma areas, Querciabella exemplifies the mindful preservation of tradition through forward-thinking, albeit completely natural winemaking.
With the 2021 vintage, Querciabella introduced three distinct Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines, each representing a different UGA (Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva), or Additional Geographical Unit, within the appellation. The project reflects Querciabella's long-standing commitment, begun in 2007, to exploring the individual expressions of Sangiovese across the region's diverse terroirs.
The Gran Selezione Greve originates from Vigna 4 and Vigna 5 in Ruffoli, on the slopes of Monte San Michele, where vineyards reach 550 meters above sea level. Planted on poor, rocky soils composed primarily of slate and sandstone, the vines have low water retention, naturally limiting vine vigor and producing smaller, more concentrated bunches. The resulting wine captures the distinctive character of Greve, combining remarkable depth and vibrant acidity with structure and energy to evolve over time.
Winemaking
After a short cold maceration on the skins, fermentation takes place in small open-top oak and cement vats, with maceration lasting up to 30 days. Regular light pump-overs ensure gentle extraction. After pressing, the wines rest on their lees until malolactic fermentation is completed in cement or stainless steel, then move to large casks (25–30 hL) for maturation.
Harvest Notes
The 2021 growing season began with an unusually mild winter, followed by warm and dry conditions in February and March that led to early budburst. A cold spell in April caused frost damage, reducing yields. Spring conditions were otherwise regular, with adequate rainfall in May. Summer was hot and dry, slowing vegetative growth and delaying ripening. Moderate rainfall at the end of August and mid-September supported final maturation.
